Universitas Nova celebrated at the Opatija CRO Melges 24 Cup
The third in a series of sailing regattas in the Melges 24 monotype class was held last weekend in the waters in front of Opatija, organized by the Yacht Club Croatia. The Melges 24 class is an internationally widespread class of sailboat monotype, recognized by the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) and is very attractive to top and experienced sailors due to the fact that it sails and competes on sailboats with the same technical characteristics. In Croatia, the Melges 24 class gathered the cream of Croatian sailing, former and current Olympians, such as Šime and Mihovil Fantela, Tonči Stipanović, Karl Kuret, Tomislav Bašić and Ivan Kljaković Gašpić.
The Opatija regatta raised the crew of JK Labuda Universitas Nova with coxswain Ivan Kljaković Gašpić to the pedestal, after consecutive celebrations of Biograd Panjić in the first and second regatta held in Dubrovnik and Biograd na Moru. Universitas Nova, for which they performed alongside Ivan Kljaković Gašpić, Mia Kljaković Gašpić, Marin Golem, Šime Markić and Filip Miroić, masterfully sailed all three races on the first day, entering the first three places. The next day, despite technical problems, the second and fifth reached the finish line, but the convincing victory of Split crew did not come into question. The second place was won by the crew of Panjić from Biograd's JK Briva, while the third place went to Mataran 24, who is also the winner in the Corinthians group, which does not have sailing professionals in its ranks. Competitors of Cro Melges 24 stayed in the northern Adriatic because in ten days, from April 1 to 3, the first regatta of the European Melges 24 Cup awaits them in Rovinj, which will be hosted by JK Maestral.
