Celebration of Biograd Panjić at the opening of the second season of the CRO Melges24 Cup
CRO Melges24 Cup, a sailing spectacle and one of the strongest Croatian regattas, opened its second season last weekend in Dubrovnik with as many as 13 boats sailing top names in Croatian sailing, including current and former Olympians, world and European champions, winners of many prestigious regatta. Organized by the Orsan Sailing Club, the first of seven regattas planned this year was successfully completed, and the victory was won by the crew of Panjić, coxswain Luka Šangulin from Biograd na Moru, accompanied by Tomislav Bašić, Duje Fržop, Marko Smolić and Noa Šangulin. Universitas Nova of Ivan Kljaković Gašpić won second place while Karlo Kuret with the ship Point One took third place.
One of the novelties this season is that a category has been introduced in scoring, which is already quite widespread in the rest of the world, and so far we could only meet at the ORC World Championship. This is a Corinthian group, ie crews that do not have members who are professionally involved in sailing in various commercial forms, which definitely brings additional competitive charge because this way smaller "sports" crews are scored in a separate group from which active and professional sailors who usually occupy most of the places at the top of the rankings. Thus, in Dubrovnik, Mataran 24 won the Corinthian group, while the second and third places were won by the crew of Iggy and Lera.
CRO Melges24 Cup, which has already been named the Sailing 'Champions League', will have a total of seven regattas this year, and in addition to the first one held in Dubrovnik, it will follow in Biograd (February 19-20), Opatija and Rovinj, Split and Zadar. host of the Croatian championship, and the international leadership of the class decided that Rovinj will be the organizer of the first European Sailing Series regatta in the Melges 24 class this year.
