The island of Unije – a significant navigation point since ancient times

The island of Unije lies in the Kvarner region, west of Lošinj and northwest of Susak, representing a typical Adriatic karst island with an elongated shape and indented coastline.  Unique to the region, the southwest of the island is covered with low level grasslands, and is home to a breed of protected indigenous cattle that roam the island known as Boškarin, reaching up to 1000 kg.

Today, Unije holds significant importance for nautical tourism as it offers safe anchorages for a large number of vessels, especially in Maracol Bay, one of the safest and most spacious anchorages in this part of the Adriatic. The In addition to Maracol, there are smaller coves offering quieter and more private stays, and a small port in the town center.

The town of Unije also offers a modest level of infrastructure—moorings, restaurants, and basic services—without excessive commercialization. This balance between accessibility and preserved nature makes it particularly attractive. To the south of the town center is a long fine pebble beach,  home to the BaraBar, a very rustical beach bar that has an amazing atmosphere during the summer season with good music, where locals mingle with visitors, form morning to late night.

Historically, Unije has a long tradition of seafaring, fishing, and agriculture. Its position along important maritime routes between Istria, Kvarner, and central Dalmatia made it a significant navigation point since ancient times.

Throughout history, the island was influenced by various powers, including the Venetian Republic, leaving traces in its cultural and architectural heritage. Although emigration has occurred here as well, it was less intense than on Susak, resulting in a more stable local community. In conclusion, Unije is an ideal destination for those seeking a reliable stop during sailing, combined with an authentic Adriatic Island experience enriched by natural beauty, history, and nautical functionality.
