La Bella Verde developed and built fully degradable catamaran
Did you know that there are around 20 million recreational craft made of very harmful non-degradable materials in the EU and the US? All these ships will end up in some waste or on the seabed in 10 to 20 years, and only a small part will be recycled, and their material used for something useful.
In response to this threat and disrespect for the sea and the environment, a Spanish company from Ibiza, La Bella Verde, developed and built the fully degradable catamaran LBV35! It is made from degradable epoxy resin, weaves made from volcanic fibers, FSC certified balsa, and recycled material created from these expired catamarans. In individual production, these catamarans have been present on the market since 2014, and were initially intended primarily for an environmental charter project. Apart from the fact that these are ecological materials, there is also an ecological solar electric drive as well as additional networks on catamarans that collect waste from the sea throughout the voyage.
Two skippers and one marine biologist are responsible for all this, thanks to whom the serial production of the LBV35 catamaran will finally start, and there is also the support of Norbert Sedlacek from the Inovation Yachts shipyard. An interesting detail about LBV35 catamarans is that the shipbuilder will buy old catamarans from the owners that will no longer sail, and recycle them. The recycled material will be fully used for the construction of new vessels.
This closed story, in which there should be no waste, could be a real example of self-sustainability for the entire small shipbuilding sector. Serial production of the catamaran will be in the French city of Les Sables d’Olonne, at the Innovation Yachts shipyard. Norbert Sedlacek as an experienced equipment and sailboat designer for regatta and competition sailboats should give his obol to quality and performance, which would mean that the cruising speed of the LBV35 would range from 8 to 12 knots with a maximum of 22 knots. These exceptional results will be accompanied by ergonomics, aerodynamics and hydrodynamics of the hull. The top design, as well as the electric drive and solar panels, fit perfectly into this concept.
