Candela Hydrofoil, the fastest electric boat for passenger transport

Swedish shipbuilder Candela, which produces the hydrofoil boat of the same name, is developing a larger passenger electric-powered hydrofoil that should replace existing diesel metal boats in the Stockholm area. The P-30 with a capacity of 30 passengers will be 12 meters long and will be powered by two 60 kW electric motors. With these drives, this hydrofoil boat should reach a maximum of 30 knots, while in cruising the speed would be from 20 to 25 knots. With a battery capacity of 180 kWh, the range of the P-30 should be around 50 NM.

In addition to becoming the fastest electric passenger vessel with this performance, the P-30 will also have this surprisingly large sail. Achieving such performance is due to the computer, which should optimize the position of the hydrofoils and thus the economy of navigation. Sailing on hydrofoils makes smaller waves, which ensures navigation at higher speeds in inland waters with less damage to the shore and moored vessels.

For an example of economy, it is interesting to note that the new hydrofoil P-30 consumes up to 80% less energy compared to fast electric vessels sailing on the same routes. The idea of the new hydrofoil passenger vessel arose as a need for alternative routes for people living in cities intersected by canals and closely connected to the sea such as San Francisco, Amsterdam, Seoul.

After the final tests scheduled for 2022, the Candela P-30 should be launched in 2023. With the aim of cheaper, cleaner and faster local transport, this boat should be not only an alternative to the classic local transport but also its replacement completely.
