Alva unveils new Ocean Eco 78
Alva Yachts, the German builder of electric solar catamarans and sailboats, has introduced the new Ocean Eco 78 – a 23.7m multihull with electric propulsion and a transatlantic range. As with Alva’s other Eco models, the 78 was designed with responsible yachting at its core. Its expansive roof has been specifically conceived for its integrated solar panels, giving a transatlantic range and virtually unlimited autonomy, says Alva, as the panels take energy from the sun and store it in the battery packs that power the electric engines.

In the full-electric variant, the 78 is powered by two 217kW electric motors, connected to a 280-490kWh battery pack, which is powered by sun and generators. The solar panels reach 26kWp (Kilowatt peak), which is ‘best in class’ compared to competitors, Alva claims, while the diesel generators produce 2 x100kW/ DC each.
Twin bathing platforms makes access to the water easy. From bow to stern, the 12m-beamed catamaran offers space, modern style and stable sailing. The lower deck has plush U-shaped seating for eight guests, perfect for al fresco dining or scocktails. From here, guests can access the enclosed saloon and entertaining area. The galley comes complete with full size fridge-freezer and features a large separate island with bar and stools. To starboard is a large dining table for eight.
An L-shaped observation seating area accompanies the helm station with views forward. Mid-ship two side companionways lead to the lower deck and accommodation. The 78 benefits from a generous master suite, complete with ensuite and separate walk-in wardrobe. Completing the starboard side is an additional double guest cabin with ensuite. Further guest accommodation is located within the portside hull and features a double room and twin room with plenty of storage space and both offer ensuite double shower facilities. The lower deck is complete with twin drop down terraces providing sunbathing options on both sides of the yacht. The fore deck provides another social space with two separate seating arrangements plus oversized sunbeds, complete with ample storage and refrigeration options.

“The new Ocean Eco 78 was created as the perfect addition to our existing range, and sits between the Ocean Eco 60 and 90 models providing owners with a generous increase in size from the 60 but removing the need for crew on the 90”, says Milan Henn, Alva’s head of design. “This new model offers everything the 60 does but on a larger scale.”
